Data Protection plays a major role in today’s connected society. We are prompted to share our personal data with everyone else.
The relationship status of data protection and digitalization is: It’s complicated. By now it is commonplace to display your life transparently on the internet. Social media like Twitter, Facebook or Instagram is not the only thing responsible for the fact that we lose control over our personal data.
The Bundesdatenschutzgesetz (BDSG) takes care of personal rights in Germany. It is always aware of the fact that it has to adjust to the fast development in the technical sector.

The main topic of the Bundesdatenschutzgesetz is the right to informational self-determination, which means the possibility to decide about the prevalence of one’s own data. Therefore, control about the fulfillment of this law must be well organized. Besides the commissary for data protection and freedom of information, Andrea Voßhoff, representatives are responsible for the protection of the citizens in the different federal states.
